A new fashion “Forest” scene is on display in the GCC Library through Dec 20th presented by Fashion Merchandising Management student — Amanda Nooitgedagt. Amanda’s scene was also featured in GCC’s 41st Annual Fashion Show “Regeneration” this past April. Amanda is in her 2nd year and after graduation plans to be a fashion merchandiser for H&M. Amanda also has aspirations to work for the John Varvatos company, the menswear label of choice for rock stars. Other fashion work experiences on her horizon are working for sustainable companies to learn ways to make clothing using eco-friendly practices.

Amanda’s artist statement:

My inspiration for my scene “Forest” came from a project that I did in 8th grade when I learned about deforestation in Indonesia and how it affects not only the citizens but also the orangutans that are sadly coming close to extinction. I went back to this project to get inspiration for my “Forest” scene and I saw that a fashion designer, Franco Moschino, painted clothes so they looked burnt and damaged. I wanted to do my own spin on it while looking at the inspiration of the runway line. My painted and scorched dresses reflect the damage of fires and deforestation. For the silver gown, I painted flames from the bottom up and added lights underneath the dress to illustrate a fire. Other dresses have been scorched in various ways. I want the audience to reflect on what we are doing to our world and the beings that live in our forests.
